The Security Council meeting failed to achieve consensus regarding the full membership of the State of Palestine in the United Nations

New York – Vanessa Fraser, Representative of Malta and President of the current session of the UN Security Council, announced that there is no consensus on reaching a consensus on the State of Palestine’s bid to obtain full membership in the United Nations.

At the second closed meeting of the “Committee concerned with accepting new members”yesterday , Fraser said, “Two-thirds of the Council members support full membership of the State of Palestine, but this committee cannot make decisions except by consensus. However, this does not represent the end of the Palestinian application .”

Last week, Palestine re-initiated its application for full membership in a letter addressed to the Security Council, which began the review process on Monday.

After the Committee’s report, any member state of the Council may put to a vote a decision on such accession. Another vote could be held on April 18, and the Maltese ambassador indicated that such a decision would need 9 votes out of 15.
