NEW YORK (United Nations) – Algeria, through its permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Amar Bendjama, called on Wednesday the Security Council to assume its responsibilities by forcing the Zionist entity to comply with its resolutions and the decisions of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) relating to the Palestinian territories.
During his intervention at the Security Council session devoted to “the situation in the Middle East including the Palestinian question”, Mr. Bendjama insisted on the Council’s obligation to enforce the latest decisions of the ICJ, namely impose on the Zionist entity to stop its aggression against Rafah and allow the passage of humanitarian aid.
The representative of Algeria recalled that the Security Council must also apply its own resolutions relating to the illegal policy of colonization in the Palestinian territories by the Zionist entity.
“The Security Council must fully implement its relevant resolutions (including) resolution 23/34, for example, which clearly states that the (Zionist) settlements in the Palestinian territories are illegal and represent a blatant violation of international law,” he asserted.
“Yet some 800,000 settlers currently reside illegally in the West Bank and are transforming the lives of Palestinians into a real nightmare,” added Mr Bendjama, recalling that the Zionist authorities had also recently approved the construction of 10,000 housing units in the Palestinian territories in profit from the Zionist settlers and decided to increase the funding allocated to the already existing colonies.
At the same time, “the occupying power continues its policy of demolition of Palestinian houses and buildings”, he said, specifying that, since the start of the current year, 470 demolitions have been supervised by the Zionist authorities in the occupied Palestinian territories, in addition, he added, “efforts aimed at Judaizing El Quds and its holy places.”
The grim reality in the West Bank, he recalled, is aggravated by the situation in Gaza, affirming that “the human toll of the Zionist massacres in the Gaza Strip speaks for itself.”
Mr. Bendjama further assured that “the suffering of the Palestinians, which began with the Zionist occupation, will only disappear with the end of this occupation.” For this, he insisted, we must not wait for the Zionist entity to implement the Security Council resolutions on its own.
“On the instructions of the President of the Republic, Mr Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Algeria as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, and with the support of the Arab group, decided to present a draft resolution urging everyone in this council to assume its responsibilities. We hope that this draft resolution can garner the support of each member of the council. We need a united council because waiting for the occupying power to voluntarily respect international law (…) will not make sense. , he argued.
In this regard, he recalled the declared desire of the Zionist entity to continue its crimes in Gaza and its attempt to discredit UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East). ) and to make this UN agency responsible for helping Palestinian refugees appear like a terrorist organization. “We call on the Security Council to defend this essential organization for the stability of the Middle East,” concluded Algeria’s representative to the UN.
