New York (United Nations) – The Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations, Ambassador Amar Bendjama, stressed on Thursday before the United Nations General Assembly the importance of reviving the work of the General Assembly to strengthen its role and authority as the main body for consultation, representation and decision-making in the United Nations, especially in the field of International peace and security.

During a speech he delivered before a specialized working group on reviving the work of the General Assembly, in his capacity as coordinator of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries, Amar Bendjama stressed the necessity of preserving the governmental, comprehensive and democratic character of the General Assembly.

The representative of Algeria noted in this regard that respect for the distribution of powers between the main bodies of the United Nations, in accordance with the Charter and relevant resolutions of the United Nations, constitutes the basis for strengthening the General Assembly.

The same official also pointed out the opposition of non-aligned countries to the continued intervention of the Security Council in matters that fall within the powers of the General Assembly and its subsidiary bodies.

On the other hand, Mr. Bendjama stressed the movement’s recognition of the importance of close cooperation between all the main organs of the United Nations on core issues, especially coordination between the General Assembly, the Security Council and the Economic and Social Council.
