NEW YORK (United Nations) – On Thursday, Algeria reiterated its call for a comprehensive reform of the United Nations Security Council and the Bretton Woods institutions, aimed at addressing decades of historical injustice inflicted on Africa. This statement was made by Algeria’s Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and African Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, during a ministerial meeting of the G20 in New York, held alongside the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.
In his address, Attaf commended South Africa’s exceptional leadership during its G20 presidency and praised its diligent efforts to promote strategic priorities that align with the needs and vision of Africa for progress. He expressed confidence that, under South Africa’s wise direction and as a full member of the African Union (AU), the G20 is now positioned to lead an agenda for inclusive global change that serves the common good.
Attaf emphasized several key points in this context. “As we celebrate the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the UN, we must work together to preserve what can truly be regarded as humanity’s most sacred and valuable legacy, encompassing the UN and the principles of international law and the multiparty system it represents,” he stated.
He also highlighted the importance of raising awareness regarding the injustices and dysfunctions within the current global governance system, which must lead to concrete reforms. Attaf stressed that it is unacceptable for Africa to remain marginalized on the world stage, asserting the necessity for a comprehensive overhaul of the Security Council and the Bretton Woods institutions to end the long-standing injustices faced by the continent.
In this regard, the Minister of State underscored the imperative of securing and enhancing Africa’s role in shaping the future of the global economy. He called for concerted efforts to ensure that Africa does not fall behind in the transformative revolutions aimed at redefining the global economic landscape, especially in vital areas such as digital technology, robotics, nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, and renewable energy.
