The Thai Armed Forces Command has officially declared the commencement of a military operation against Cambodian forces in nearby territory, following a significant escalation in hostilities. This operation includes the deployment of artillery, aircraft, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that are engaging in aerial strikes to thwart the buildup of Cambodian troops. Thai Air Force F-16A/B fighters have targeted Cambodian ground forces, illustrating the intensity of the offensive.
Tensions along the border have sharply increased after Cambodia launched multiple rocket attacks into civilian areas of Thailand earlier today. These strikes, which included an assault on a gas station in Surin province, tragically resulted in the deaths of two individuals, including schoolchildren, and caused numerous injuries. In retaliation, Thai forces crossed into Cambodian territory and took control of the Preah Vihear temple, a historically significant site that has long been a source of contention between the two nations.
To mediate the situation, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is set to engage in discussions with the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia in an effort to de-escalate the conflict. Diplomatic sources indicate that Malaysia, as the chair of ASEAN, is aiming to convene an emergency meeting to address the ongoing crisis. In response to these developments, Cambodia has accused Thailand of aggression and is reportedly preparing countermeasures, raising concerns about the potential for a full-scale war.
