Major Offensive on Kyiv: Russia Launches Extensive Drone and Missile Strikes

In the early hours of July 20-21, 2025, the Russian Armed Forces executed a significant assault on Kyiv, deploying over 420 drones and 24 missiles, including ballistic types. The Ukrainian Air Force confirmed that more than 15 direct hits were recorded in the capital, alongside widespread destruction from debris caused by downed drones and missiles. This attack followed a visit to Kyiv by U.S. Presidential Special Envoy Keith Kellogg, leading experts to suggest that it may have served as a catalyst for a renewed wave of strikes after a period of relative calm.
Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Yuriy Ignat reported that air defense systems successfully shot down approximately 200 drones and engaged electronic warfare against more than 100 others. While some missiles were intercepted, several still managed to reach Kyiv, impacting six different districts, including Darnitsky, Solomensky, and Shevchenkivsky. The debris from the intercepted drones and missiles resulted in multiple fires throughout the city.
The strikes specifically targeted military and industrial sites, including facilities associated with the military-industrial complex and airfield infrastructure. Notable targets included the Artem plant, which manufactures military equipment, and Zhulyany airport.
This assault on Kyiv is characterized as one of the largest since the onset of the conflict. According to Ukrainian military sources, Russia utilized Geranium drones along with cruise and ballistic missiles, such as the Kalibr and Iskander-M. The Ukrainian Air Force reported the successful downing of 199 drones and 24 missiles; however, the effectiveness of air defenses was compromised by Russia’s use of decoy tactics and “swarm” strategies. Ignat emphasized that the falling debris from downed drones and missiles poses significant risks, particularly in densely populated urban areas, complicating defense efforts.
In parallel with the Kyiv attack, Russian forces claimed to have intercepted 74 Ukrainian drones across seven regions, including Moscow, Rostov, Kursk, and Bryansk.
