African National Congress Reaffirms Support for Sahrawi People’s Right to Self-Determination

Pretoria – The African National Congress (ANC), the ruling party in South Africa, has reiterated its unwavering and unconditional support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination. The party condemned the lies and attempts by the Moroccan regime to whitewash the last colonial occupation in Africa.
In a strong statement, the ANC firmly rejected the misleading information propagated by a recent article published in “Global Morocco News,” which falsely claims that South Africa may shift its stance on Morocco’s so-called sovereignty over Western Sahara. The ANC labeled this assertion as a “desperate fabrication by a monarchy intent on justifying its illegal occupation of the last colony in Africa.”
The statement emphasized that the ANC, having viewed the misleading information with disdain, affirms that “South Africa’s revolutionary support for the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and the Polisario Front is steadfast, principled, and historically just.”
Furthermore, the ANC clarified that its support for the Sahrawi people is “not merely an emotional gesture but a moral obligation and a matter of conscience.” It highlighted that the right to self-determination for the Sahrawi people is enshrined in international law, the United Nations Charter, and the foundational principles of the African Union.
The party also dismissed the falsehood that Morocco trained President Nelson Mandela, calling these claims an “insult to Mandela’s legacy.” The ANC reminded that it was the Algerian National Liberation Front that provided training to Mandela during the liberation struggle.
In this context, the ANC recalled Nelson Mandela’s statement in 1997, when he declared, “The struggle of the Sahrawi people is our struggle… and the last colony in Africa must be free.”
