India Shuts Down 32 Airports Amid Escalating Tensions with Pakistan

Amid soaring tensions along the Line of Control in the contested region of Jammu and Kashmir, India has taken urgent measures to enhance security, including the closure of 32 airports. Reports indicate that after a brief period of calm earlier in the day, intense gunfire and explosions erupted along the border, instilling fear among local residents. Widespread power outages and restrictions on movement have further compounded the chaos in the region.
On the night of May 9, 2025, powerful artillery strikes were reported along the contact line, resulting in significant destruction in border villages. Local residents have been grappling with complete power outages in some areas of Jammu and Kashmir, with Indian media confirming that thousands of households are affected, worsening an already dire humanitarian situation. Energy company representatives have yet to provide a timeline for restoring electricity, citing the challenging circumstances.
In response to the escalating conflict, India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation announced the suspension of airport operations until May 15, 2025. While the official reason cited was “operational reasons,” experts believe the closure is a precautionary measure against potential attacks. New Delhi has declared a state of high alert, implementing increased patrols, road checks, and heightened security around key government buildings. Similarly, Pakistan has bolstered security in major cities, including Islamabad and Karachi, advising citizens to avoid large gatherings.
The longstanding conflict between India and Pakistan over territorial claims to Jammu and Kashmir has a fraught history, with both nations possessing nuclear capabilities and frequently teetering on the brink of war. The frequency of incidents along the Line of Control has surged significantly since the beginning of 2025, raising alarms within the international community. Despite calls for de-escalation from the UN and various world leaders, diplomatic efforts have yet to produce meaningful outcomes, leaving both nations in a precarious situation.
