India-Pakistan Relations Deteriorate: Military Tensions Reach New Heights

April 24, 2025 – In a significant escalation of military tensions between India and Pakistan, the Indian Army accused Pakistani forces of shelling its positions along the Line of Control (LoC) in the disputed Kashmir region. This incident marks a serious violation of the ceasefire established in 2021, as Pakistani troops reportedly opened fire with small arms and mortars near Srinagar.
In response to the shelling, India swiftly deployed air power, scrambling fighter jets and airborne early warning and control aircraft for reconnaissance missions. While there have been no official reports of casualties or damage, both sides have confirmed the intensity of the clashes, raising alarms across the region.
This confrontation comes in the wake of the recent Pahalgam terror attack, where militants allegedly linked to the Resistance Front (TRF) group killed 22 tourists on April 26. The Indian government has accused Pakistan of harboring and supporting these terrorists, a claim that Islamabad vehemently denies. Following the attack, New Delhi responded by closing the main border crossing, suspending the Indus Water Treaty, and expelling Pakistani diplomats, resulting in a sharp deterioration of bilateral relations.
The situation has further escalated as Pakistan has increased its military presence along the LoC, with Defence Minister Khawaja Asif issuing stern warnings against any provocations. “Any action initiated by India will receive a massive response,” Asif stated. “If they begin attacking, it will clearly escalate into a full-scale war.”
According to reports, the Srinagar incident follows a series of ceasefire violations. Just weeks earlier, on April 2, Pakistani forces fired upon Indian positions in the Poonch area, prompting a counter-response from Indian troops. The Times of India elaborates that while the Indian army maintains a dominant position along the LoC, the growing frequency of skirmishes threatens the fragile peace that has existed in the region.
Experts interviewed suggest that domestic political factors may be influencing the recent escalation. With elections approaching in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has intensified his tough rhetoric, while Pakistan’s military aims to bolster its influence amid ongoing economic challenges.
The TRF, formed in late 2019, has been implicated in several deadly attacks across Jammu and Kashmir, including the recent Pahalgam attack, which claimed 26 lives, including those of foreign nationals.
In a significant move, the Pakistani Foreign Ministry announced that all visas issued to Indian nationals are now void, requiring them to leave the country within 48 hours. The ministry also declared that Pakistan would not tolerate any violation of its sovereignty or security, stating that its airspace would be closed to all Indian aircraft.
The current tensions between these two nuclear-armed nations have drawn concern from the international community. “Tensions between nuclear-armed nations are always alarming,” one analyst noted. “The world needs to pay attention. If things spiral out of control, the consequences could be catastrophic.”
