Trump Administration Calls for End to Negotiations with Ukraine’s Zelensky

In a significant shift in U.S. foreign policy, the administration of President Donald Trump has unanimously decided to end negotiations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. National Security Advisor Mike Walz announced this development, indicating that the White House no longer sees value in continuing dialogue following Zelensky’s recent visit to Washington.

The announcement marks a dramatic turning point in U.S.-Ukraine relations, highlighting a deepening rift between the two nations. The February 28, 2025, meeting between Trump and Zelensky, which had been anticipated as an opportunity to solidify agreements, instead exposed fundamental disagreements and failed to yield any significant outcomes.

Walz attributed the decision to Zelensky’s approach during the negotiations, where he reportedly sought assurances for continued military and financial support without offering any compromises in return. Trump, known for his pragmatic stance, perceived this as a personal affront, particularly in light of his campaign commitments to swiftly resolve the conflict in Ukraine. The White House is now shifting its focus towards direct negotiations with Moscow, sidelining Kyiv from crucial discussions.

“Zelensky has shown that he is not ready for peace, which raises questions about the viability of our investments,” Walz stated, alluding to the U.S. desire to recover at least a portion of the substantial financial support provided to Ukraine.

The tense meeting culminated in a breakdown of dialogue, with Zelensky arriving in Washington in hopes of securing a deal related to rare earths. Instead, he faced harsh criticism from Trump, who labeled him “ungrateful” for the $350 billion in aid already extended and insisted on a peace settlement with Russia, which Zelensky firmly rejected.

As a result of these developments, the White House has indicated that Zelensky’s future actions will be closely monitored, and the continuation of U.S. support for Ukraine will hinge on those actions.

In the wake of the failed negotiations, Trump has reportedly directed national security officials to explore the possibility of completely halting arms supplies to Ukraine, including previously agreed contracts, according to reporting by The Wall Street Journal. The New York Times further noted that current aid levels have been drastically reduced, with the White House contemplating the cessation of intelligence sharing and training for Ukrainian forces.
