Security Council: The key to reform is to have two African countries as permanent members

ADDIS ABABA – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed in Addis Ababa the need to reform the Security Council and allow Africa to have two permanent members within this Council, reports the press service of the organization.

“There is now a consensus among Member States on the need to reform the Security Council and a consensus among all Member States that the key aspect of this reform is to have two African countries as permanent members of the Council security”, he said on Monday during a joint press conference with the President of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat.

He indicated, in this context, that many decisions were taken concerning “the capacity to deepen our cooperation with the African Union in areas such as prevention, mediation, peacebuilding and the capacity to “act together to resolve the multiple conflicts that the African continent, like the entire world, is faced with today.”

“I returned from the Future Summit with the awareness that the conditions are now ripe for the international community to begin to bring justice to the African people,” he added.

The UN SG who co-chaired with Moussa Faki Mahamat the 8th Annual African Union-United Nations Conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, emphasized, on the occasion, the importance of continuing collaboration between the two organizations as the implementation of the Compact for the Future adopted by the Member States of the United Nations in September in New York begins.

Moreover, discussions at the conference focused on the progress made in the implementation of cooperation frameworks between the two organizations, as well as on the implementation of Security Council resolution 2719, which establishes the framework for financing of peace support operations carried out by the African Union through obligatory contributions from the UN, said, for his part, the deputy spokesperson for the head of the UN, Farhan Haq, during a press briefing in New York.

Participants also discussed challenges related to peace, security, development, human rights and the impact of climate change on the African continent, as well as the implementation of the Global Compact. future.
