RAMALLAH (Occupied West Bank) – On Monday, Zionist occupation forces released 83 Palestinian prisoners from Ofer Prison, located west of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank. This release is part of the first phase of a ceasefire agreement reached in the Gaza Strip following two years of aggressive Zionist actions.
According to the initial phase of the plan, all Zionist prisoners in the Gaza Strip will be released in exchange for the release of 250 Palestinian prisoners, many of whom have received lengthy sentences, including life imprisonment. This includes 83 prisoners from Ofer Prison and 167 from Waktziot Prison in the Negev, as reported by the Wafa news agency.
Earlier in the day, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) announced that it had received 20 Zionist prisoners of war from the Gaza Strip in two groups and had handed them over to the occupation authorities.
Palestinian prisoner organizations report that the number of detainees in Zionist prisons exceeds 11,000, many of whom suffer from catastrophic conditions, including torture, starvation, and systematic medical neglect, leading to several deaths in custody.
Since October 7, 2023, Zionist occupation forces have committed genocidal acts in the Gaza Strip, resulting in the martyrdom of nearly 68,000 Palestinians, the majority of whom are women and children. A famine has also claimed the lives of 463 citizens, including 157 children.
The ceasefire agreement, concluded between the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas and the Zionist entity, came into effect last Thursday. The first phase of this agreement calls for an end to Zionist aggression, the withdrawal of occupation forces, access to humanitarian aid, and prisoner exchanges.
