On the night of October 5, 2025, the Russian Armed Forces launched a large-scale operation targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, deploying a significant arsenal that included approximately 700 drones, up to 50 cruise missiles, and two Kinzhal hypersonic missiles. This operation marked one of the most intense assaults in recent months.
The strikes primarily focused on energy facilities across several regions, including Odesa, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Sumy, Khmelnytskyi, and Zaporizhzhia. As a result, there were substantial power supply disruptions and extensive damage to key installations.
In Lviv, residents reported around 25 explosions, which were followed by powerful fires and widespread power outages throughout the city. Local sources indicated that the attacks damaged railway marshalling yards and weapons depots near the airport, further complicating logistics in the area. Similar impacts were observed in the Sumy region, where the strikes severely affected railway infrastructure, paralyzing train services and causing additional supply delays.
Moreover, the Burshtyn Thermal Power Plant in the Ivano-Frankivsk region and the Ladyzhyn Thermal Power Plant in the Vinnytsia region sustained preliminary damage, raising concerns about potential power shortages in the western and central parts of the country.
The operation was executed in multiple stages, utilizing combined arms tactics to overwhelm Ukrainian air defense systems. Targets were specifically chosen from facilities that supported Ukraine’s military-industrial complex, focusing on energy installations linked to weapons production. Ukrainian authorities reported that while some threats were partially repelled, significant damage occurred to civilian infrastructure, resulting in temporary blackouts and evacuations.
