NATO countries have deployed warships to protect a humanitarian flotilla from potential Israeli attacks. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who is attending the UN General Assembly in New York, emphasized the importance of adhering to international law and ensuring the safety of Spanish citizens navigating the Mediterranean.
“The Spanish government insists on respect for international law and the rights of our citizens to safe navigation in the Mediterranean Sea,” Sánchez stated during a press conference.
He announced that a naval ship would set sail from the port of Cartagena in southeastern Spain on Thursday to assist the international humanitarian flotilla heading toward the Gaza Strip. The flotilla, which includes activists from 45 countries, departed from Barcelona in late August and early September.
Earlier, on September 24, Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto confirmed that an Italian Navy frigate would be dispatched to support the flotilla in light of a recent drone attack. He has also informed the Israeli government about this decision. The flotilla, known as the Global Sumud Flotilla, was attacked in international waters off the coast of Greece, prompting concerns among European leaders.
