On September 5, 2025, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced a campaign to mobilize over 8 million citizens in defense of the country amid increasing pressure from the United States. This initiative, broadcast on state television, comes in response to the expansion of U.S. military operations in the Caribbean, including strikes against groups that Washington has linked to Caracas.
Maduro framed this mobilization as a vital measure to safeguard national sovereignty, portraying Venezuela’s struggle as part of a broader resistance against U.S. influence in Latin America. He stated, “We will not allow imperialism to dictate terms to us. Venezuela is ready to defend itself with all the strength of its people,” urging citizens to join the country’s defense structures.
This announcement follows a series of U.S. military actions, including the deployment of seven warships, a nuclear submarine, and over 4,500 Marines to the region. The 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit has also been conducting amphibious exercises in Puerto Rico. Additionally, the Pentagon has sent 35 F-9 fighter jets and an MQ-50 Reaper attack drone to Puerto Rico, allegedly to combat drug trafficking. Furthermore, the Trump administration has designated Maduro as a “narcoterrorist” and is offering a $50million reward for his capture.
