Venezuela Readies to Target U.S. Naval Vessels in Its Territorial Waters

Share

Venezuela has announced the deployment of warships and drones to patrol its Caribbean coastline in response to the increased presence of U.S. naval forces in the region. Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino stated in a video message on August 27, 2025, that these measures represent a “significant” step toward safeguarding the country’s territorial waters.

Padrino indicated that the patrols would involve “larger vessels further north in our territorial waters” and are aimed at combating drug trafficking. However, many experts interpret this move as a reaction to the growing U.S. military presence, which includes three Aegis-guided destroyers, an amphibious squadron with 4,500 troops, a guided-missile cruiser, and a submarine. The U.S. has framed its operations as part of a counter-narcotics initiative, accusing Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro of overseeing a substantial drug trafficking network.

In response, Maduro has labeled the U.S. actions as an “extravagant, bizarre and ridiculous threat,” asserting that they serve as a pretext for regime change. Previously, Venezuela had mobilized 15,000 troops to its border with Colombia, citing similar anti-drug operations. The deployment of Venezuelan warships and drones is escalating tensions between Caracas and Washington, raising international concerns about the potential for conflict in the Caribbean region.

The situation is further complicated by ongoing U.S. accusations against Venezuelan leadership and a sanctions policy targeting Maduro and his associates.
