US-Russia Summit in Anchorage: Preliminary Deal Possible Before Meeting

Share

The United States and Russia may have reached a preliminary consensus in anticipation of the meeting between Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, scheduled for today, August 15, 2025, at 22:30 Moscow time in Anchorage, Alaska, according to a Kremlin source cited by Reuters.

The source indicated that some conditions are likely to be agreed upon during the meeting, noting, “Trump cannot be refused, and we cannot refuse due to the pressure from sanctions.”

While specifics of any potential agreement remain unclear, the recent imposition of new US sanctions on Russian individuals and entities on August 14 is believed to have motivated Moscow to seek a compromise.

The summit will take place at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base, commencing with a private conversation between the two leaders, followed by discussions among their delegations, and concluding with a working breakfast. The Russian delegation will include Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Defense Minister Andrei Belousov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, RDIF head Kirill Dmitriev, and presidential aide Yuri Ushakov. A press conference is expected to follow the summit.

Trump has previously expressed his intention to pursue a ceasefire in Ukraine, while steering clear of territorial discussions without Ukraine’s involvement. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has emphasized the importance of addressing security guarantees and territorial disputes.
