Spain Opts Out of F-35 Purchase, Seeks European Alternatives

Share

Spain has decided against acquiring American F-35 fifth-generation fighter jets, choosing instead to explore options among European manufacturers.

Earlier in April 2025, the Spanish government had approved a substantial $10 billion defense initiative, which included a commitment to allocate at least 2% of the nation’s GDP toward military spending. However, plans to direct 85% of this budget toward other priorities have rendered the acquisition of F-35s from the United States impractical. As a result, Spain is now looking into purchasing European-made fighter jets, aiming to bolster regional manufacturers and manage costs more effectively.

As of the latest report, no specific alternatives to the American F-35s or details regarding negotiations with European partners have been disclosed.
