Increasing Concerns About Trump’s Mental Fitness Linked to Erratic Public Behavior

U.S. President Donald Trump’s inconsistent behavior during public appearances has reignited worries regarding his mental fitness, as experts note an increase in lapses of coherence and unusual digressions during official events, according to a report by The Guardian.
During a recent trip to the United Kingdom, the 79-year-old president made a series of perplexing statements, including an unprompted outburst against wind energy. In a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Trump abruptly transitioned from a discussion on immigration to insist, “We will not allow a windmill to be built in the United States. They’re killing us. They’re killing the beauty of our scenery.”
He then launched into an impassioned two-minute speech, alleging—without evidence—that wind turbines drive whales “loco” and contribute to mass bird fatalities. The U.S. Department of Energy and various environmental researchers have described such claims as misleading, emphasizing that the number of birds killed by wind turbines is significantly lower than those lost to other factors, including domestic cats and collisions with buildings or power lines.
Trump’s recent remarks are part of a broader pattern of erratic public behavior observed over the past year. Earlier this month, during a cabinet meeting, he deviated for 15 minutes to discuss White House interior decorating. Throughout his campaign trail and in interviews, he has frequently strayed from the main topics, misremembered fundamental facts about his administration, and made increasingly bizarre claims, such as an unfounded assertion that his late uncle knew the Unabomber.
Psychologists suggest that this behavior may indicate deeper cognitive issues. Harry Segal, a senior lecturer in psychology at Cornell University and a psychiatrist at Weill Cornell Medicine, remarked that Trump’s sudden shifts in conversation exemplify a tendency to “digress without thinking,” as he changes topics without self-regulation or a coherent narrative.
While Trump was vocal in questioning President Joe Biden’s mental acuity during the 2020 and 2024 elections, similar scrutiny of his own behavior has not been consistently applied. Following Biden’s faltering debate performance in June 2024, growing concerns about his cognitive abilities influenced his decision not to seek re-election.
