The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) executed their largest drone strike in a month, targeting the Leningrad Region of Russia. This operation coincided with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s attendance at the Navy Day celebrations in St. Petersburg, amplifying the attack’s impact and timing.
Governor Alexander Drozdenko of the Leningrad Region took to Telegram to report that air defense systems successfully intercepted and shot down “more than a dozen drones.” The debris from these downed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) was scattered across multiple locations, including Gatchina, the Voiskovitsky settlement, the Kingiseppsky district, and the industrial zone of Primorsk.
In a concerning incident, one drone’s debris ignited a fire in the Lomonosovsky district’s private sector, resulting in injuries to a woman who sustained bruises and cuts. Fortunately, she received prompt medical attention. Additionally, residents from various areas, including Vsevolozhsky district, Yanino, Volosovo, Novoye Devyatkino, and Bornitsy, reported hearing explosions.
The ramifications of the attack extended to Pulkovo Airport, where emergency protocols known as the “Carpet” plan were activated. This led to significant disruptions, with over 100 flights delayed as authorities scrambled to manage the fallout. Emergency services continue to work to address the aftermath, while law enforcement agencies are conducting investigations into the incident.
In light of these developments, officials have urged residents to remain calm and rely solely on official communications for updates.
