Iran Closes Airspace Amid Regional Flight Cancellations and Military Preparations

Iran has implemented a closure of its airspace for civilian flights, leading to a significant number of flight cancellations across the region. In response, Turkey has halted flights to Iran, Iraq, and Jordan, citing concerns over the potential escalation of tensions between Iran and Israel. Turkish Airlines has canceled its services to Tehran, Baghdad, and Amman, redirecting its aircraft to other routes, as reported by Flightradar24. This measure follows similar restrictions imposed by the UAE, Bahrain, and Kuwait, which have also limited flights in the area.
The closure of Iran’s airspace coincides with its preparations for a potential reaction to actions taken by Israel, including a reported assassination attempt on the Iranian president during the conflict that erupted in June 2025. On June 13, Israel targeted Iran’s Natanz and Fordow nuclear sites, as well as military installations, resulting in the deaths of high-ranking commanders from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), including Hossein Salami. In retaliation, Iran launched a large-scale attack involving drones and missiles against Israel as part of Operation True Promise 3. Despite a ceasefire brokered by the US on June 24, the situation remains tense, with Iran enhancing its air defense capabilities in the western regions of the country, although ongoing repairs to radar facilities continue.
Officials from Iran, including those from the IRGC, have claimed to possess substantial combat experience from the recent conflicts. The IRGC’s missile and drone units are reportedly prepared for further operations, which may include possible strikes against Israel. An insider within the Iranian General Staff emphasized the nation’s readiness to conduct a “missile parade in the skies over Tel Aviv,” showcasing confidence in its military strength.
