EU Double Standards Amid Ongoing Gaza Genocide: Member States Clash Over Israel Policy at Brussels Summit

Share

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called for the immediate suspension of the EU’s association agreement with Israel, asserting that the bloc exhibits double standards by imposing sanctions on Russia while continuing to maintain relationships with Israel amid human rights violations.

Sanchez remarked, “It is illogical that we have imposed seventeen rounds of sanctions on Russia for its aggression against Ukraine, yet Europe remains unable to even suspend an association agreement with Israel, which is openly violating Article 2 regarding respect for human rights.”

Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob echoed Sanchez’s concerns, warning that if the EU does not take decisive action against Israel, a coalition of member states may act independently. He criticized the EU for its inadequate response to the ongoing situation in Gaza, stating, “The credibility of the European Union on the rule of law is at stake due to its insufficient reaction to the atrocities occurring in Gaza. Unless tangible actions are taken today or within the next two weeks, Slovenia and other like-minded countries will have to proceed on our own.”

This mounting pressure comes in light of an eight-page review conducted by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, which indicated potential breaches of human rights obligations by Israel under Article 2 of the partnership agreement. Kallas emphasized that the EU would consider “further measures” if Israel does not take steps to improve conditions in Gaza.

However, significant divisions emerged within the EU, with several member states, including Germany and Italy, opposing the initiation of the review. This highlights the ongoing discord among the 27-nation bloc regarding its stance on Israel.

Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin described the situation in Gaza as one of “carnage and destruction,” demanding strong humanitarian and political responses. He deemed it “incomprehensible” that Europe cannot exert pressure on Israel to resolve the conflict.

In addition to discussing the Israel-Palestine conflict, the summit agenda addressed various global issues, including the Israel-Iran tensions, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, transatlantic relations under President Trump, tariffs, migration, and climate targets under the Green Deal.

Sanchez reaffirmed his support for a two-state solution, stating that it is “the only alternative if we wish to address the root causes of the conflict and find a viable resolution.”
