Security Council: The Shield of Immunity and Impunity Enjoyed by the Israeli Entity Must Fall

New York (United Nations) – Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, emphasized yesterday in New York that the shield of immunity protecting the Israeli entity must come to an end, following the Security Council’s failure to adopt a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
In his remarks after the vote, Mr. Bendjama asserted, “The shield of immunity must fall,” adding that the inability to pass this resolution explains why the Israeli entity continues to commit atrocities against the Palestinian people, particularly in Gaza, which is facing brutal aggression.
The Algerian representative at the UN pointed out that Israel feels protected while the victims of its crimes are buried nameless and without identity, receiving no coverage in the media and without any investigations or accountability.
The American veto obstructed the adoption of the resolution proposed by non-permanent members of the Security Council, despite the fact that the other 14 members voted in favor of it.
Mr. Bendjama continued, stating, “Today’s resolution is not supported by a minority of nations; it represents the collective will of the entire world—North and South, East and West—where 14 out of 15 Security Council members voted for a ceasefire.”
In this context, the Algerian diplomat affirmed that the message to the Palestinian people is clear: “You are not alone, you are not alone,” and it serves as a message to the Israeli occupiers: “The world is watching you.”
He added, “We must speak out loudly… for the sake of memory, ethics, and humanity. This Security Council meeting and this humanitarian resolution, even if obstructed by a veto, reflect the decline of pluralism. It is essential to revive it.”
Mr. Bendjama praised the “courage, conviction, and clarity” of the elected members of the Security Council who put forward the resolution, noting that they are the “guardians of moral legitimacy and the true compass of the world’s conscience.”
He also referenced a statement from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who affirmed that “Algeria will not abandon Palestine” and “will stand by it in its plight until it achieves independence.”
Moreover, Mr. Bendjama expressed that the Security Council should have adopted this resolution to “stop the killing of Palestinian children and prevent the use of starvation as a weapon of war so that injustice does not become the norm.” He considered that the rejection of the resolution “will not halt efforts to prevent Israeli crimes.”
Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN stated, “We will return to this Council time and again; we will return for the children who have been killed… we will return for the women forced to give birth amid rubble and flames, and for the fathers who built homes only to see them collapse in seconds… We will return because the Palestinians deserve to live in freedom and dignity.”
