Abkhazia’s President Badra Gunba has announced the establishment of a material and technical support facility for the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Navy in the vicinity of Ochamchira. Gunba clarified that this project will not serve as a full naval base, but rather as a specialized site dedicated to providing crucial support to the Russian fleet. This initiative marks a significant development in the military collaboration between Russia and Abkhazia, particularly in enhancing interactions between the defense ministries of both nations.
The strategic location of Ochamchira, situated along the Black Sea coast, has long attracted the attention of the Russian military. Naval News reported that in July 2024, a vessel from the Black Sea Fleet, specifically a Project 22870 ship, was observed in the port of Ochamchira, likely seeking refuge from Ukrainian naval drone attacks. Analysts had previously speculated that Russia was considering the port as a secure anchorage for its naval assets. Despite its current limited infrastructure, there are plans to upgrade the port to accommodate logistical operations, supporting Gunba’s assertion.
The announcement of this support facility comes amidst a complex geopolitical landscape in the Black Sea region. In October 2023, Russia formalized an agreement with Abkhazia to build a naval base in Ochamchira, provoking strong reactions from Georgia. The Georgian government regards Abkhazia as its territory and perceives Russia’s actions as a breach of its sovereignty. In response, Abkhazian President Aslan Bzhania emphasized that the new facility would bolster the defense capabilities of both Russia and Abkhazia, aligning with the strategic intentions expressed by Gunba.
