Moscow’s airports faced significant operational challenges for the second time in just a week, following a large-scale drone attack attributed to Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The overnight strikes, which persisted into the morning hours, severely affected all four major air travel hubs in the capital: Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo, and Zhukovsky.
Rosaviatsia reported that while flight restrictions due to the drone threat were lifted by 7:15 a.m., the ramifications were profound. Dozens of flights were delayed or canceled, leaving thousands of passengers inconvenienced. The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that air defense forces successfully intercepted and destroyed 296 drones across 13 regions, including the Moscow area, highlighting the extensive nature of the attack.
In response to the disruptions, Aeroflot announced adjustments to their flight schedule, which included the cancellation and merging of certain flights. Passengers were encouraged to stay informed by checking updates on the airline’s website and the airport information boards. Those affected by cancellations were offered the option of free ticket rebooking or a full refund, while passengers experiencing delays received provisions of water, food, and, when necessary, accommodations in nearby hotels.
