Merseyside Police have reported that 11 individuals who were hospitalized following the Liverpool parade collision are recovering well. A total of 65 people sustained injuries during the incident.
The suspect, a 53-year-old white British male from the West Derby area of Liverpool, has been arrested on charges of attempted murder, dangerous driving, and driving under the influence of drugs.
During a press briefing this afternoon, Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims explained that the vehicle involved followed an ambulance after a roadblock on Water Street was lifted to allow paramedics to assist a man experiencing a suspected heart attack. The car entered the road from Rumford Street.
Detectives have confirmed that the incident is not being treated as terror-related, and no additional suspects are being pursued. “There was no intelligence to suggest an incident of this nature would take place,” Ms. Sims stated.
She also defended the policing operation at the parade, asserting that the force had planned for “all contingencies.” This statement followed comments from the city’s metro mayor, who raised “legitimate” questions about how the vehicle was able to access the road.
The arrested man remains in custody and is currently being interviewed by officers. Due to the high number of victims, Merseyside Police is receiving assistance from neighboring forces, according to Detective Chief Superintendent Karen Jaundrill.
“We are conducting extensive inquiries using CCTV footage across the city to trace the movements of the Ford Galaxy involved in the incident,” she added. “We have already received an overwhelming response from many witnesses who were present last night.”
Messages of support have poured in for the people of Liverpool following the incident, with the Prince and Princess of Wales expressing their deep sadness over the events. “What should have been a joyful celebration ended with tragedy,” they remarked.
