On Saturday, May 24, 2025, Russia and Ukraine reached an important milestone in their conflict by completing the second phase of the largest prisoner exchange yet, following the “1000 for 1000” agreement. Both countries successfully brought back 307 soldiers each, highlighting their commitment to repatriating military personnel during these difficult times.

This exchange differed from the initial phase, which occurred on May 23 and included both military and civilian captives. The first round saw the return of 390 individuals from each side, comprising 270 military personnel and 120 civilians. Notably, among those freed were three women and soldiers who had been engaged in combat across key regions such as Kyiv, Chernihiv, Sumy, Donetsk, Kharkiv, and Kherson, some having endured captivity since 2022. Additionally, Russian reports indicated that civilians released included individuals captured during the Ukrainian offensive in the Kursk region in the summer of 2024.

The latest exchange, as highlighted by the Russian Defense Ministry, was strictly focused on military personnel, emphasizing the critical need for both nations to secure the return of their combatants.

The exchanges took place at the border between Ukraine and Belarus. Upon their return, the released Russian soldiers undergo initial medical evaluations before being transported back to Russia. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian servicemen are directed to medical facilities in the Chernihiv region for rehabilitation, marking a crucial step in their reintegration process.

The final phase of this unprecedented operation is anticipated to occur on Sunday, May 25, concluding a series of exchanges that began following discussions in Istanbul on May 16, highlighting a rare moment of cooperation amid ongoing hostilities.
