Russian President Vladimir Putin has confirmed the establishment of a “buffer security zone” along the border with Ukraine, citing ongoing efforts by the Russian armed forces to enhance security in the region.
This initiative is not a recent development; the Kremlin first signaled the need for such a zone in March 2024, the objective was to safeguard border areas from potential Ukrainian attacks. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, since the start of 2025, Russian forces have made significant advances in several key areas, including the Kursk, Belgorod, and Sumy regions, in an effort to shift the front line further from Russian territory.
Additionally, an operation is being conducted aimed at reclaiming the remaining sections of the border between the Zaporizhia region and the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR)
