Khamenei Rejects U.S. Nuclear Deal, Calling Demands Outrageous and Affirming Iran’s Sovereignty

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei expressed skepticism regarding the likelihood of reaching a nuclear agreement with the United States, labeling the demands from the Donald Trump administration as “outrageous.” His remarks were made in response to recent statements from the American president claiming progress in the ongoing talks. Khamenei’s hardline stance, coupled with Iran’s refusal to compromise on uranium enrichment, underscores the deepening crisis in U.S.-Iran relations and the potential for escalating tensions in the Middle East.

During a speech to clerics in Tehran, Khamenei firmly rejected the possibility of consenting to key U.S. conditions, which include a complete cessation of uranium enrichment. “Iran will not submit to the dictates of external forces. Our nuclear program is a matter of sovereignty and national security,” he stated. He also noted that previous negotiations with Washington had failed and were unlikely to yield positive results now. Khamenei’s comments were a direct response to a letter from Trump in March 2025, which set a 60-day deadline for an agreement. That deadline has since lapsed, with talks ongoing for 38 days without any breakthrough.

Iran’s stance complicates the Trump administration’s efforts to revive the nuclear deal, which was abandoned in 2018. The U.S. is advocating for stringent restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program, including a halt to uranium enrichment at weapons-grade levels and enhanced monitoring by the IAEA. Iran demands the lifting of all sanctions and assurances of non-interference in its internal affairs. Tehran views its nuclear program as essential for deterrence and bolstering regional influence, particularly in light of threats from Israel.

Tensions have escalated following CNN’s report of new U.S. intelligence indicating that Israel is preparing for potential strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, including the Natanz and Fordow complexes. U.S. administration officials have voiced concerns that such actions could provoke a full-scale conflict involving Iran’s allies.

Khamenei’s position has garnered support from Iranian conservatives, who dominate the parliament. Press TV reports that they have described U.S. demands as “colonialist” and have called for an acceleration of nuclear development.

According to the IAEA, Iran is projected to increase its enriched uranium stockpile by 20% in the coming year
