UK Suspends Trade Negotiations with Israel as Horror Unfolds in Gaza’s Humanitarian Crisis

LONDON— The United Kingdom has suspended trade negotiations with Israel and summoned the Israeli ambassador in response to what it describes as an “intolerable” military offensive in Gaza

Prime Minister Keir Starmer, expressed his horror at the escalation of violence from Israel, while Foreign Secretary David Lammy characterized the situation as entering a “dark new phase.” In a statement to the House of Commons, Lammy emphasized the urgency of the UK’s actions, stating that the conduct of Netanyahu’s government necessitated the suspension of negotiations.

In his remarks, Lammy pointed out that the ongoing military operations in Gaza were damaging the UK’s relationship with Israel. He warned that the government would take “further action” if Israel continued its offensive and failed to ensure the “unhindered provision of aid” to the beleaguered region. He stated, “Despite our efforts, this Israeli government’s egregious actions and rhetoric have continued, isolating Israel from its friends and partners around the world.”

The Israeli ambassador to the UK, Tzipi Hotovely, has been summoned to the Foreign Office, where Middle East minister Hamish Falconer is expected to convey the UK government’s concerns regarding the ongoing blockade of aid to Gaza. Lammy described the 11-week aid blockade as “cruel and indefensible,” stressing that the expansion of the conflict and dismissal of international concerns cannot continue.

In his address to Parliament, Lammy reiterated the humanitarian crisis facing civilians in Gaza, warning that the threat of starvation looms large. He also noted that the remaining Israeli hostages held by Hamas are at a “heightened risk” as the violence persists. “The humanitarian catastrophe intensifies,” he added, underscoring the urgent need for a resolution to the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza.
