Starmer Deems Russia’s Stance in Ukraine Negotiations “Unacceptable”

Share

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned Russia’s position articulated during the Istanbul negotiations with Ukraine as “clearly unacceptable,” accusing Moscow of attempting to prolong the conflict, emphasizing that Russia has “not for the first time” shown a lack of willingness to compromise.

Starmer’s remarks followed his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Ankara and a subsequent phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump, where they discussed strategies for coordinated action. The Prime Minister noted that allies are “closely coordinating responses” to intensify pressure on Russia and bolster support for Ukraine.

The Istanbul talks marked the first direct engagement between Russia and Ukraine since March 2022 and concluded with an agreement on a prisoner exchange of 1,000 individuals, the largest of its kind during the conflict. However, Russia insisted on the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from four contested regions and hinted at the potential occupation of the Kharkiv and Sumy regions—demands that have drawn widespread criticism. Vladimir Medinsky, head of the Russian delegation, expressed readiness for a “long struggle,” likening the situation to the 21-year Northern War with Sweden.

Starmer’s position aligns with that of Western allies. Leaders from Britain, France, Germany, and Poland have previously dismissed Russia’s demands to halt arms sales to Ukraine in exchange for a ceasefire, labeling it an “ultimatum,”.

Meanwhile, Trump, while supportive of the negotiations, has warned that he may withdraw from the peace efforts if no progress is made, further increasing the pressure on both parties involved.
