Zelensky Welcomes Putin’s Initiative for Talks in Istanbul

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed cautious optimism regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin’s initiative to resume talks in Istanbul on May 15, 2025, viewing it as a potential step towards resolving the ongoing conflict. In his statement, Zelensky highlighted that Moscow’s willingness to engage in dialogue could signify a shift in its stance. However, he underscored that a comprehensive, long-term, and reliable ceasefire is a prerequisite for any discussions, urging that such a ceasefire should take effect as early as May 12.
Andriy Yermak, head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, reiterated Zelensky’s position, stating that negotiations could only commence following the establishment of a 30-day ceasefire.
The proposal to resume dialogue arrives amid a challenging military and diplomatic landscape. Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov noted that any discussions should reflect the outcomes of meetings held in 2022 and consider the current conditions on the front lines. Russia is advocating for talks to address key issues, including Ukraine’s neutral status, recognition of new territorial realities, and the lifting of sanctions.
Despite this proposal, Western leaders remain skeptical. They point out that Moscow’s conditions for an immediate ceasefire appear inadequate and may be viewed as an attempt to buy time rather than a genuine effort towards peace.
