Pope Francis Dies at 88, Leaving a Legacy of Humility and Service

Pope Francis has passed away at the age of 88, according to an announcement from the Vatican. The pontiff died at his residence in Casa Santa Marta, with Cardinal Farrell expressing profound sorrow over the loss. “His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church,” he stated, reflecting on the Pope’s commitment to faith and compassion.

Pope Francis’s death comes just a day after he made a public appearance in St. Peter’s Square to wish thousands of worshippers a “Happy Easter.”

During the Easter Sunday celebration, the Pope, who appeared in a wheelchair, greeted the crowd from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, expressing his warm wishes. His traditional Easter address and blessing were delivered by an aide while he observed from his seat. Following the blessing, he was taken around the square, stopping multiple times to bless infants brought forward by their parents.

In light of the Pope’s passing, questions arise regarding the protocols following his death. Traditionally, papal funerals have been elaborate, but Pope Francis had previously approved plans to simplify the process. Unlike his predecessors, who were buried in a series of nested coffins made of cypress, lead, and oak, he opted for a simple wooden coffin lined with zinc. Additionally, the customary practice of placing the Pope’s body on a raised platform, known as a catafalque, for public viewing has been discarded. Instead, mourners will be invited to pay their respects while the Pope’s body remains in the coffin with the lid removed.

In a historic deviation from tradition, Pope Francis will be the first pontiff in over a century to be buried outside the Vatican. He will be laid to rest at the Basilica of St. Mary Major, one of the four major papal basilicas in Rome.

In an official statement, Cardinal Farrell conveyed the somber news: “Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning (local time), the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father.” He emphasized the Pope’s lifelong dedication to the Gospel’s values, particularly in service to the poorest and most marginalized, adding, “With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”
