Russia Proposes Alliance with Washington Against “Eurofascism”

The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has published an article on its official website titled “Eurofascism, Just Like 80 Years Ago, Is a Common Enemy for Moscow and Washington.” The article is accompanied by a striking cartoon depicting a swastika with claws and a woman’s face, symbolizing what the SVR claims is a historical threat from Europe.
The SVR’s statement asserts that Europe has a “historical predisposition” towards totalitarianism, which periodically leads to global conflicts. In light of ongoing tensions between the United States and the European Union—particularly regarding accusations of authoritarianism directed at President Donald Trump—Russia sees a potential opportunity for a situational rapprochement with Washington. The article suggests that a united front against “Eurofascism” could serve as a foundation for preventing a new global conflict, drawing parallels to the cooperation seen during World War II.
Timed to coincide with the upcoming 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, the SVR’s statement has sparked significant discussion. It reflects Russia’s attempt to reinterpret historical narratives, positioning Europe as a source of instability while portraying the United States as a potential ally in countering this perceived threat. The accompanying cartoon further emphasizes the provocative nature of the message, alluding to the aggressive policies of certain European leaders.
The SVR underscores the necessity for joint efforts to avert escalation, citing the successful collaboration of the anti-fascist coalition during the 1940s as a historical example of effective cooperation.
