At least six individuals were injured in a mass shooting at Florida State University (FSU) on Thursday, as confirmed by hospital officials. Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare reported that it is currently treating the victims, all of whom suffered gunshot wounds. One patient is in critical condition, while the other five are listed as serious.
A suspect has been taken into custody, according to two law enforcement sources with direct knowledge of the situation. However, the full extent of the injuries remains unclear, as preliminary reports are still being assessed.
The FSU Alert system issued a warning just after noon, informing students of an “active shooter” near the Student Union. The alert emphasized the need for individuals to seek shelter and await further instructions, advising them to lock their doors and stay away from windows.
Students on campus described a chaotic scene, alarms sounded in the university library, prompting law enforcement to escort students out with their hands over their heads.
Messages from FSU Alert continued to instruct those on campus to shelter in place, stating that law enforcement was actively clearing buildings.
Governor Ron DeSantis expressed his thoughts for the FSU community through a post on social media platform X, stating, “Our prayers are with our FSU family, and state law enforcement is actively responding.” Florida Attorney General also announced that his office was responding to the situation on campus.

Shooter Identified: Son of Leon County Deputy
The shooter has been identified as 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, the son of a Leon County Sheriff’s deputy and a former member of the sheriff’s Youth Advisory Council. Officials report that Ikner used a firearm legally purchased by his mother, who is a former deputy, and it has been confirmed as her personal weapon. The gun was recovered at the scene of the incident.
