EU to Impose Tariffs on $28 Billion of U.S. Goods in Response to Trump’s Trade Policy

The European Union is poised to approve retaliatory tariffs on $28 billion worth of American imports. The targeted products include bourbon, semiconductors, and toilet paper, marking a direct response to former President Donald Trump’s tariffs on EU steel, aluminum, and automobiles.

Trump’s trade measures have affected more than 70% of EU exports to the United States, which totaled $585 billion in the previous year. With this impending decision, Brussels joins the ranks of China and Canada in intensifying the global trade standoff.

As EU officials navigate differing views within the bloc—France advocates for investment pauses, Ireland calls for restraint, and Italy questions the need for retaliation—a critical vote is scheduled for Wednesday to finalize the new tariffs.

The implementation of these tariffs will occur in two phases, starting on April 15. In anticipation of the EU’s actions, Trump has issued a stark warning of potential 200% counter-tariffs should the EU proceed with their plans.
