Democrats Claim Surprise Victory in Wisconsin Election, Shifting Power Dynamics

Share

Elections in Florida and Wisconsin concluded with significant implications for the balance of power in Washington, particularly highlighted by the Democratic Party’s victory in the Wisconsin Supreme Court race. Judge Susan Crawford, backed by Democrats, secured a crucial win that poses an early challenge to the agenda of newly inaugurated President Donald Trump, who took office in January 2025.

Crawford triumphed over conservative challenger Brad Schimel, who received substantial support from billionaire Elon Musk, a prominent ally of Trump. Musk, known for his radical proposals aimed at reducing the federal government’s size, invested over $20 million into Schimel’s campaign via his political foundations, including America PAC. His campaign tactics included distributing large cash donations to voters to support petitions against “activist judges.” Despite these efforts, Crawford garnered approximately 55 percent of the vote compared to Schimel’s 45 percent, maintaining a 4-3 liberal majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

This victory is strategically significant, as the Wisconsin Supreme Court could now serve as a barrier to Trump’s policies, particularly concerning voting rights, abortion rights, and congressional redistricting. Musk aimed for Schimel’s success to solidify the Republican-favored congressional boundaries; however, Crawford’s win could lead to a redrawing of those lines, endangering two Republican seats in Congress and weakening their fragile majority.

The April 1, 2025, election in Wisconsin set a record for judicial spending in U.S. history, with total expenditures exceeding $90 million. Democrats mobilized extensive resources, drawing support from figures like former President Barack Obama and billionaire George Soros. Following her victory, Crawford addressed supporters in Madison, stating that her election represented “an answer to billionaires trying to buy justice.” She pledged to uphold judicial independence, asserting that “Wisconsin is not for sale.”

Florida Republicans achieved victories in two special House races, with Jimmy Patronis and Randy Fine winning the seats previously held by Trump administration appointees Mike Waltz and Matt Gaetz. These traditionally conservative districts expanded the Republican majority in Congress to 220-213. However, Democrats noted a 15-20% reduction in the voting gap compared to the November 2024 elections, indicating a potential decline in Trump’s popularity among voters.
