The Russian Ministry of Defense has disclosed substantial losses suffered by the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) during ongoing military operations in the Kursk region. According to official estimates released on March 21, 2025, Ukrainian forces have lost approximately 400 tanks in the recent confrontations near the state border with Ukraine. This significant figure underscores the scale of military operations that have persisted for over six months, highlighting the intensity of clashes in the area. It is important to note that these estimates are provisional, as fighting continues, and some destroyed equipment remains unidentified.
Many of these losses can be attributed to the effective actions of the Russian “North” group of forces, which has been actively thwarting attempts by the UAF to establish a foothold on Russian territory since August 2024. Tanks, which are a crucial component of the UAF’s armored capabilities, have become primary targets for Russian artillery, aviation, and drone units. However, the precise breakdown of the destroyed tanks by type and origin remains unclear. Analysts speculate that the losses include both Soviet-era vehicles inherited by Ukraine and modern tanks supplied by Western allies, such as the German Leopard 2 and American M1 Abrams. The identification of many destroyed units is complicated by the extensive damage they have sustained in combat, necessitating further examination by military specialists.
The reported loss of 400 tanks not only highlights the operational effectiveness of the Russian Armed Forces but also signifies the strategic importance of the Kursk direction for both sides in the conflict. Since hostilities began in August 2024, the UAF has made several attempts to penetrate deeper into the region. However, Russian troops have successfully halted their advances, inflicting substantial damage on enemy personnel and equipment.
