Ceasefire Negotiations in Ukraine Set to Begin This Sunday in Jeddah

Details surrounding a potential ceasefire agreement in Ukraine are set to be discussed this Sunday in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The announcement was made by Steve Witkoff, the special envoy of elected U.S. President Donald Trump, who emphasized the importance of this meeting in the ongoing quest for peace in the region.

The initiative follows a recent telephone conversation between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which reportedly laid the groundwork for these negotiations. Insights from various Telegram channels, including Shot, have surfaced, confirming the active preparations for the upcoming talks.

Witkoff stated that Washington anticipates support from Kyiv for the proposed conditions, which aim not only to halt strikes on energy facilities but also to cease all attacks on critical infrastructure. He believes these measures are essential for stabilizing the situation in Ukraine. “The draft agreement is comprehensive and seeks to achieve sustainable peace,” Witkoff remarked, expressing optimism about the ongoing dialogue between the two nations. He added, “Two great leaders have joined forces for the benefit of humanity,” suggesting that this collaboration is already yielding positive results.

Saudi Arabia was selected as the neutral venue for the negotiations due to its proven track record in mediating conflicts. The kingdom successfully hosted discussions regarding the Ukrainian issue in 2023, bolstering its reputation as a diplomatic facilitator. Analysts predict that representatives from both the Middle East and Europe may join the discussions, further enhancing the international scope of the negotiations.

In the days leading up to the meeting, various outlines for a potential agreement have been widely debated online. Some experts propose a temporary freeze of the front lines, accompanied by the establishment of demilitarized zones, while others speculate about the possibility of offering economic guarantees to Ukraine in exchange for a stance of neutrality. Although these details remain unconfirmed, Witkoff indicated that Washington is committed to a pragmatic approach aimed at avoiding further escalation.
