US B-52s Launch Massive Strikes on Houthi Targets in Yemen’s Capital

The US Air Force started a large-scale bombing campaign in Yemen’s capital, Sana’a, deploying B-52 strategic bombers to target installations associated with the Ansar Allah (Houthis). This operation began on the night of March 18, 2025, as part of a broader military initiative announced by President Donald Trump, who had vowed to unleash “rain from hell” in response to Houthi threats in the Red Sea.

Yemen’s Al Masirah TV, reported that the bombings struck government buildings and military sites, resulting in civilian casualties.

In retaliation, the Houthis launched a missile attack targeting the US Navy ship USS Harry Truman in the Red Sea. Military spokesman Yahya Saria stated that the ballistic missile was part of a “retaliation operation.” The US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the attack, noting that the missile was intercepted by the air defenses of an accompanying vessel, and no damage was reported.

This series of events marks a notable increase in hostilities, heightening tensions in a region already fraught with uncertainty. The conflict has intensified since Trump ordered a significant military response against the Houthis on March 15, accusing them of jeopardizing international shipping routes. Recent reports indicate that US forces have conducted over 47 strikes across seven Yemeni provinces, including Sana’a and the critical port of Hodeida. According to the Houthi Ministry of Health, these strikes have resulted in more than 50 fatalities, including women and children.

In response to US actions, the Houthis have escalated their attacks on US and Israeli targets, framing their military operations as support for the Palestinians amid Israel’s renewed genocide in Gaza. As of March 17, the group claimed to have launched 18 missiles and drones at the USS Harry Truman, marking the third assault on the aircraft carrier within 48 hours.

Experts warn that the conflict could spiral into a larger confrontation, given the strategic significance of the Red Sea. In a statement on Truth Social, Trump expressed that US operations would persist until the threat from Ansar Allah is fully neutralized, accusing Tehran of exacerbating tensions through its proxies. In light of these developments, US bases in the region have been placed on high alert.
