U.S. Intensifies Strikes Against Houthis in Yemen, Casualties Rise

Share

The U.S. military has escalated its operations against Houthi targets in Yemen, resulting in significant casualties among the local population. According to the Houthis Ministry of Health, the airstrikes killed at least 31 individuals and injured over 100 others, some with severe injuries. The city of Taiz bore the brunt of the latest attacks, where U.S. aircraft targeted military facilities associated with the Houthis .

In response to the escalating conflict, the Houthi political leadership issued a stern warning through Al-Masirah TV, declaring that Yemeni forces are prepared to retaliate with “an escalation for an escalation.” This statement comes as the Houthis continue to attack commercial vessels in the Red Sea,

The current wave of U.S. strikes commenced on March 15, when U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced a major military operation aimed at protecting American interests and ensuring freedom of navigation in the region. The U.S. military reported that the airstrikes targeted radar stations, air defense systems, and missile and drone launchers used by the Houthis. Strikes have not only impacted Taiz but also affected other vital locations, including the capital Sanaa, the port city of Hodeidah, and the Dahyan district in Saada province, where damage to a local power facility has caused widespread power outages.

The operation involves fighter jets from the USS Harry S. Truman, an aircraft carrier stationed in the Red Sea, along with other U.S. naval assets. U.S. officials have emphasized that this operation is not a singular event but part of a series of “sustained” strikes that may last for days or even weeks. The primary objective is to diminish the Houthis’ military capabilities while refraining from targeted attacks on their leaders or Iranian advisers, who are believed to be providing support.

The escalation in Yemen occurs against the backdrop of ongoing Houthi attacks on international shipping. According to Pentagon reports, the rebels have executed 20 attacks on U.S. warships and 17 attacks on commercial vessels since November 2023, severely disrupting global trade routes. In response, the U.S. and its allies, including the UK, have initiated Operation Prosperity Guardian, conducting over 900 airstrikes on Houthi positions since January 2024. However, experts warn that these military measures have yet to yield a complete cessation of attacks and may have inadvertently fortified the Houthis’ standing within Yemen.

The humanitarian situation in Yemen continues to deteriorate, with millions in need of assistance as violence escalates.
