The meeting, included 26 countries, According to Downing Street, the summit marked a significant step as discussions transition into an “operational phase,” with military leaders scheduled to meet in the UK this week.

The primary objective of the summit is to persuade the United States to endorse a long-term security framework for Ukraine. The gathering aims to solidify commitments that could ensure Ukraine’s defense in future conflicts.

Zelensky’s Call for Strong Action

During the summit, President Zelensky emphasized the need for “active pressure” on Russia to achieve a genuine ceasefire. He stated, “Peace must begin unconditionally. If Russia doesn’t want this, then strong pressure must be applied until they do.” Zelensky criticized recent comments from Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding ceasefire conditions, labeling them as “manipulative” and indicative of Russia’s reluctance to end the conflict.

In a statement on X, Zelensky expressed his frustration with Russia’s inaction, saying, “A ceasefire could have already happened, but Russia is doing everything to prevent it.” He underscored that this ongoing war, which has lasted over three years, is Russia’s responsibility and reiterated the necessity of “active pressure, not just talks,” to facilitate peace.

Zelensky further stressed that security guarantees are essential for a reliable and lasting peace. He advocated for a stronger presence of European contingents on the ground, with the United States serving as a backstop. He called for unity among not only Europe and the G7 but also “all other countries around the world for the sake of peace,” asserting, “The world must understand that Russia is the only obstacle preventing peace.”

Starmer’s Urgent Appeal

In the press conference following the summit, Prime Minister Starmer asserted that now is the time for the international community to apply “maximum pressure” on Russia. He characterized Ukraine as the “party of peace,” contrasting its stance with what he described as Putin’s ongoing delay in pursuing a ceasefire. “This should be the moment that the guns fall silent,” Starmer declared.

Looking ahead, Starmer announced that military leaders would convene on Thursday to advance into the “operational phase” of logistical planning, aiming to “accelerate practical work” in support of Ukraine. He noted that the coalition of nations willing to support Ukraine has expanded over the past two weeks, with new commitments made during the summit, although specific details were not disclosed.
