WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump has revealed that American officials, including Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, are currently engaged in discussions in Russia aimed at finding a resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Speaking at a recent press briefing, Trump expressed optimism regarding the potential for a ceasefire.
In his remarks, Trump highlighted Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent declaration of readiness to consider a ceasefire as a positive development. “I have received information that things are going in the right direction in Russia. I hope Putin and other leaders are ready to put an end to this nightmare,” he stated, acknowledging the encouraging nature of Putin’s statement, albeit noting the absence of detailed proposals. He expressed hope for a swift ceasefire and indicated his desire for a personal meeting with Putin to discuss the next steps.
Simultaneously, Trump disclosed that Washington is actively consulting with Kyiv regarding the territorial implications of any future agreement. “We are not acting blindly. We are negotiating with Ukraine about territories, about what will remain and what will be lost,” Trump explained, emphasizing the complexity of discussions surrounding critical assets, including the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant, a key energy facility of strategic importance. He highlighted the negotiations surrounding control over such assets as a challenging endeavor.
“We discuss key issues in advance so as not to waste time on temporary measures that will not produce results,” Trump added, underscoring the importance of clarity in negotiations.
The President also addressed the topic of Ukraine’s potential NATO membership, reaffirming that the U.S. position on this matter remains consistent and unchanged for decades, effectively ruling out the possibility in the near future.
Trump concluded by expressing hope that Russia would show a willingness to engage in constructive dialogue, cautioning that any lack of cooperation would be “a huge disappointment to the entire international community.”
