WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed that discussions are underway regarding territorial concessions with Ukraine, specifically addressing lands that Kyiv may lose due to the ongoing conflict with Russia. During the press briefing, Trump emphasized Washington’s commitment to achieving a swift resolution to the situation in Eastern Europe.
A U.S. delegation, led by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, is currently in Russia negotiating terms to end hostilities in Ukraine. “I am told that things are going well in Russia and that interaction on the Ukrainian issue is proceeding normally,” Trump stated, expressing satisfaction with the progress of these diplomatic efforts.
Additionally, Trump expressed his willingness to meet personally with Russian President Vladimir Putin to delve into the specifics of a potential settlement. A focal point of the negotiations is the control of the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant, Europe’s largest nuclear facility, which has been under Russian control since 2022. “We are discussing who will get the power plant and other territories. It is a difficult process, but the first step is a ceasefire,” he explained.
The President cautioned that the failure of these talks would have significant implications for international diplomacy. “If a ceasefire agreement with Russia is not reached, it will be a great disappointment to the entire world,” Trump remarked, underlining the importance of achieving diplomatic success for his administration.
Negotiations to resolve the Ukraine conflict have intensified since Trump resumed his role in the White House. American and Ukrainian representatives met in Saudi Arabia last week to develop a framework for a potential ceasefire. During these discussions, Kyiv agreed to a U.S. proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, contingent upon similar commitments from Moscow. In a further sign of renewed cooperation, Washington has resumed military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine, aiming to restore trust after previous tensions between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
