U.S. Re-Designates Houthis as Foreign Terrorist Organization

Share

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Tuesday that the Houthi movement in Yemen has been officially re-designated as a foreign terrorist organization.

The re-designation comes in response to a series of over 100 Houthi attacks on vessels in the Red Sea since October 7, 2023, which have raised alarms about the safety of commercial shipping routes in the region.

The Houthis were initially designated as terrorists by Trump in 2021, but the Biden administration later reversed that decision. With this latest move, Trump has reinstated the designation, citing concerns over threats posed to U.S. personnel and the broader implications for global trade.
