Poland Voices Alarm as US Moves Toward Lifting Sanctions on Russia

Share

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has voiced grave concerns regarding reports that the United States may soon lift sanctions imposed on Russia. LTusk indicated that Washington appears poised to ease restrictions on Moscow, a move that could have significant implications for European security.

“A decision was announced to suspend US aid to Ukraine and possibly begin lifting sanctions against Russia. We have no reason to believe this is merely rhetoric,” Tusk stated, underscoring the imminent threat this poses to Europe, Ukraine, and particularly Poland.

This alarming statement follows recent actions by the Donald Trump administration, which has been reassessing its foreign policy since early 2025. The suspension of military assistance to Kyiv, occurring after a contentious exchange with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, has already raised alarms across Europe. Tusk warned that such US maneuvers create a “more difficult situation” for Warsaw and its allies, exacerbating pressure on the EU’s eastern borders and undermining efforts to bolster support for Ukraine.

Tusk’s remarks are set against the backdrop of shifting American policy under Trump. According to Reuters, in February 2025, the president suggested a reevaluation of sanctions, framing it as a necessary step toward establishing peace and rekindling economic ties with Russia. Bloomberg reports that the White House is contemplating the lifting of certain restrictions, particularly those affecting energy and trade, in exchange for concessions from Moscow in ongoing negotiations with Ukraine. Sources cited by The New York Times reveal that Trump views this as an opportunity to enhance the US position in the global energy market while alleviating pressure on American businesses impacted by the sanctions.
