Russia — Lavrov Criticizes European Peacekeeping Proposals in Ukraine as Provocative

Share

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has condemned ongoing discussions in Europe regarding the potential deployment of peacekeepers in Ukraine, labeling them as “impudence” and an extension of Kyiv’s efforts to incite conflict with Moscow. Lavrov asserted that the West, particularly European nations, is using the concept of a peacekeeping mission as a means to bolster military support for Ukraine, contradicting their stated intentions for peace.

In his remarks, Lavrov expressed skepticism about the sincerity of these proposals, emphasizing that any initiatives to introduce peacekeeping forces—whether under the auspices of NATO, the European Union, or individual European countries—are unacceptable to the Kremlin if Russia’s position is not considered. He argued that such actions necessitate the consent of all parties involved in the conflict, yet Moscow has not been included in discussions surrounding these plans.

Lavrov’s comments highlight a perception that Europe is not genuinely pursuing a resolution to the conflict but is instead exacerbating tensions and obstructing efforts to de-escalate the situation. This criticism comes in the context of increasing European initiatives aimed at resolving hostilities. Recently, the United Kingdom and France announced their intention to collaborate on a joint plan to end the fighting, which would include the involvement of peacekeepers.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed that London, in coordination with Paris and Kyiv, is preparing a document to be presented to the United States. Meanwhile, France has proposed the deployment of European troops in Ukraine to oversee a ceasefire.
