US Russia — Ukraine Talks Downgraded to Lower Level
Share
The upcoming meeting between Russia and the United States regarding the Ukrainian conflict, set to take place in Riyadh, will occur at a lower diplomatic level than previous discussions. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov announced that the dialogue will now involve the heads of departments rather than the usual deputy ministers. This shift in representation has sparked speculation about the current state of Russian-American relations and the peace process, which appears to be either stalling or entering a more routine phase.
Ryabkov did not provide specific details about the meeting’s agenda, but the change in the level of representation is telling. Previously, discussions were held at the level of deputy foreign ministers, but the delegation will now consist of less influential figures. Experts interpret this development in several ways. It could indicate a diminishing priority for the dialogue on both sides, suggesting that neither party is prepared for substantial compromises or significant decisions. Alternatively, the meeting may serve a purely technical function, focusing on logistical details without the intent to make critical advancements. Lastly, this format might be viewed as a political gesture reflecting a cautious approach or a waning interest in actively addressing the Ukrainian issue.
Despite the downgrade in the level of representation, the continuation of negotiations in Riyadh underscores that dialogue between Moscow and Washington remains ongoing, albeit under less prominent circumstances.
