New York (United Nations) – The United Nations Security Council will hold closed consultations on Thursday regarding the situation in Syria, at the invitation of Algeria in its national capacity.
During these closed consultations, chaired by Algeria, the Council’s President for January, Special Envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen, will provide his briefing via video link from Damascus.
Today’s session will mark the second time this month that Security Council members convene to discuss the situation in Syria, following their regular meeting on political and humanitarian developments on January 8.
Council members are expected to emphasize the need for a comprehensive political transition led and owned by Syrians, while safeguarding Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence, highlighting the role of the United Nations in facilitating the transitional process.
The Council is also anticipated to express concerns regarding Israeli actions on Syrian territory, as the Israeli entity has conducted hundreds of airstrikes across Syria, targeting military equipment and sites, in addition to carrying out ground incursions that have expanded its control over the Golan Heights and Syrian territory.
It is worth noting that Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Mr. Amar Ben Jamel, highlighted during the presentation of the Security Council’s work program for January, under Algeria’s presidency, that “as an Arab member of the Security Council, issues related to the Arab region, particularly the situations in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Sudan, remain among our primary concerns in light of the troubling developments occurring in these brotherly countries,” affirming that Algeria will not hesitate “to take appropriate actions in a timely manner.”
