Algeria – On Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at the headquarters of the People’s National Army, the Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defense and Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army, Army General Saïd Changriha, received Mr. Javier Colomina, NATO’s Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy, who is on an official visit to Algeria leading an important delegation, according to a statement from the Ministry of National Defense.
The same source indicated that the meeting was attended by “generals and colonels from the Ministry of National Defense and the People’s National Army, as well as members of the NATO delegation.”
After welcoming the visiting delegation, Army General Chengriha stated in his speech that this visit “reflects NATO’s interest in enhancing dialogue with Algeria, particularly regarding the establishment of conditions for regional stability and security. It is also an opportunity to exchange views on the situation in the region and explore ways to develop joint cooperation.”
He added: “We consider NATO’s Mediterranean Dialogue, which Algeria joined in 2000, as one of the important frameworks that allows for consultation on common security issues and more effective responses to threats affecting the stability of the region. This is a constant concern for countries on both sides of the Mediterranean, which led NATO to adopt the ‘Southern Neighborhood Action Plan’ at the organization’s conference in Washington last July, which you have been tasked to coordinate.”
He affirmed that the dialogue between Algeria and NATO “reflects both parties’ commitment to enhancing cooperation mechanisms, which has enabled the establishment of a strong and fruitful partnership characterized by dynamic consultation, coordination, and exchange of experiences, further strengthened by several high-level visits from both sides.”
He concluded by saying: “While I express our appreciation for the current level of this cooperation, I believe that our partnership will witness a new impetus through the adoption of the ‘Individual Partnership Program,’ which is currently under discussion, allowing for the prospecting of new opportunities for beneficial and deeper cooperation for both sides.”
For his part, Mr. Javier Colomina praised the strong will he observed from the Algerian side to advance and develop bilateral military cooperation, commending “Algeria’s efforts and its pivotal role in ensuring the security and stability of the region.”
